Preparing for your Photo Shoot
corporate •creative • family • seniors • beach • children
In order to get the most out of your shoot it's important to think about it a little in advance - here are some ideas.
Think about what you are going to wear - what does your company require you to wear for a busines headhot? Are you looking for something very formal and buiness-like or a more relaxed shot. To get the most use out of your headshot, consider getting a formal and a casual shot - you are welcome to bring a change of clothes to the shoot.
Whatever you decide to wear, make sure it is clean, well-pressed, and not old or scruffy looking. If you buy a new shirt for the occassion, get the fold marks pressed out. You are investing in a great headshot, make sure your clothes look as good as they can.
A headshot just captures your head and shoulders, so your neckline becomes very important. A round neck can make your neck look shorter and a V neck can lengthen it. If you plan to wear a shirt and tie, make sure it fits well, a tight collar will look awkward.
Think about the colors you are wearing. Go for a solid color for a strong look, but make sure you choose a color that suits you - ask for advice from friends and family ahead of time if you are not sure. Avoid very busy patterns, as they will take the emphasis away from your face. Make sure you choose something that you feel comfortable and confident wearing as that will translate in the image. A white shirt can be hard to photograph, especially if it's paired with a black jacket - try and select tones that are a bit closer in range.
Men should get a haircut a week before the shoot if possible, to avoid that 'just trimmed' look. If you are coming in the afternoon and tend to have a heavy shadow, feel free to bring shaving supplies, as you are welcome to use our bathroom.
Apply make-up as you would normally, but bring it with you for touch-ups, along with any hair products you use. If you want a little extra sparkle, consider booking a hair and make-up appointment at The Loft Salon/ Spaprior to your shoot. We can set the appointment up for you to coincide with your photo shoot.
Your headshot is your whole image and will be the way people remember you, if you are an actor, musician or model. It is your opportunity to express your unique look and personality.
Choose clothes that your are comfortable wearing, but make sure they are clean, not wrinkly and not old or raggy. You make think you look great in that old black t-shirt, but a photograph will show every flaw, bobble and speck of dust. Although we can retouch it, you don't want to deal with it in every image!
As with any photograph, think of the color and neckline you are choosing. Look at headshots you like and think about what they are wearing. Ask friends and family what looks good on you. Maybe bring what you would wear to an audition or to a performance. Remember it is about your face, your image and your personality. Avoid logos and text on your shirt. If you are getting a full length or three quarter shot, consider your whole outfit, including shoes.
For a really strong result, you may want to get hair and make-up professionally done before your shoot. We can set you up with an appointment at a local salon - we use The Loft Salon/ Spa in Manchester and one in Boston also. If you want to have your hands in the shot, get your nails done ahead of time too.
You can bring 2 - 3 changes so we have some options for your shoot. If one outfit isn't working, we can try something else.
Whether we are shooting in the studio or on location, what you wear can make a big difference to an image. For a family group think about wearing clothes that coordinate. Even if you don't want to all be wearing the same outfit, you should make sure your colors match and your clothing is in the same syle - are you all wearing sweaters or t-shirts?
For a family group, we often see all of you, from head to toe, so think about your whole outfit - and that of the rest of you family. For a classic look, solid colors work well. Follow the guidelines for creative and corporate headshots when choosing clothes that suit you and are well prepared.
The beach is always a fun place to get a portrait taken. You can go for a classic, timeless look by choosing denim or khaki shorts and white or blue t-shirts. White also captures the feel of the beach, dresses for girls and shorts and shirts for boys. Or it can be an opportunity to express yourselves as a family and wear fun colored t-shirts.
Depending on the time of year we photograph your look will be different. The beach can work in the spring and fall if you wear sweaters and jeans. In the summer, bring your bathing suits for some fun shots running out of the ocean and playing in the surf. We shoot when the light is best, in the early morning or late afternoon, so bring some layers to keep warm.
Make sure everyone is dressed for the shoot - even if you are just planning to have the kids photographed use the opportunity to get a shot of the whole family.
Even on the beach, bring a hairbrush and make-up for touch-ups!
A senior portrait is an opportunity to express yourself. It should be fun, energetic and unique to you. What do you love to do? Sports? Cheerleading? Playing the trumpet? Art? Bring some props that represent you and your interest and clothes that you like to wear that help define who you are! You can bring formal wear, sports or casual.
Most yearbooks want a straightforward head and shoulders photograph, similar to a creative headshot, but you can use the opportunity to get a variety of pictures that will be a wonderful keepsake for years to come.
Our standard shoot includes two - three looks (outfit changes) in the studio on a plain backgound. If you choose our extended package, you get the full rock star treatment, and in additon to the two -three looks we'll shoot some three quarter length and full length, in the studio using available light. We'll also go outside and shoot using the water, the red-brick buildings and the park as fun backgrounds.
If youhave a specific place you want us to photograph your senior portrait let us know - we'll happily meet you there!
Think about your hair and make-up ahead of time, guys should get a haircut a week before their appointment if they need one. Girls can get an appointment at The Loft Salon, to make sure they look their best - we can help you set it up.
If you choose to do your own hair and make up, bring your supplies along, so you can do touch-ups as you go.
Bring a friend if you want, for advice, moral support and ideas! If you both buy a portrait session on the same day, we'll give you both a 20% discount!
Little kids don't have the hassle of worrying about hair and make-up, but clothes are still important. Choose a color and outfit that suits your child and something they are comfortable wearing and won't fuss about. It's more important to show their sparkling personality in a portrait.
Bring a couple of changes, so that if something isn't working we can try something else.
We have a very relaxed studio, with toys and coloring books. We'll get to know you and your child and family before we shoot, so that they are comfortable with us and the studio. We give you lots of time and you will be the only family in the studio at any time, so there is no pressure.
If your child needs a break or a snack, that's fine, we'll work with you to get an image you love. There is no limit on the number of 'poses' or groupings and we give you all of the images from the shoot.
Come on over and have some fun!
